Book Condition Ratings
Note: The following condition descriptions are to give you a general idea of how we grade our books. Each book is unique, so grading them is subjective. Any one flaw does not necessarily make the book receive a lesser condition ranking. If a book has a considerable flaw we note it in the description of the book. Any library discarded or withdrawn books are noted as such. Many of our books were printed 30, 40, or even 50 years ago, and some are no longer in print. Due to their age and rarity, these older book are graded more liberally. Normal aging conditions such as yellowing from acidic paper do not detract from an older books ranking. Grade "A" Books: Very Good to Like NewAny damage in this grade would normally consist of: paint flecking from the edges, very very slight wear of the binding, slightly dented corners, or a store price tag. "A" books are ideal for collectors, or as gifts. Grade "B" Books: Good or Above AverageThese books have been gently read, but noticeably read. They may have wear lines in the binding and may have dog-eared pages and minor creases on the cover. They may have store stickers or stamps, and a "B" book may also have an inscription or bookplate. Grade "C" Books: Acceptable or AverageThese books have usually been read multiple times, causing heavier wear to the binding and cover. They may also have limited writing, highlighting, or stickers/stampings on them if they are in otherwise good condition. The pages of older books may have considerable yellowing. "C" books can have slightly warped bindings, or fall open due to a break in the binding...though no pages will be loose or missing There may be slight tears in the covers or pages, but it cannot affect the books readability. "C" books are considered reading copies and are usually not recommended to collectors. Grade "D" Books: Poor or Below AverageThese books have been abused by their previous owners. There may be heavy discoloration of pages, large stains, and water damage. The pages may be wrinkled and yellowed. The cover may have corners torn off, holes, or heavy dents. The spine may be broken, but no pages will be falling out. These books are definitely not of gift quality and are only recommended for a well-used reading copy. "D" books are likely to have just a few more readings in them before they are sent to their grave. Grade "F" Books: FailingA book that is in such poor condition that it is unreadable, or just plain repulsive. Books with missing pages, obscured text, cat urine or other "ishy" stains will not be listed at Lost And Bound. |
